Dr. Richard Tanner has joined the staff of Claiborne County Hospital as a hospitalist.
Tanner, a lifelong Tennessee native, works for Apogee Physicians, which contracts with the hospital to provide hospitalists.
Internal medicine specialists for the most part, hospitalists take care of patients in the hospital. Those patients may normally be patients of a group that has the primary physician, but the hospitalist has an agreement to take care of those patients while they are in the hospital. The hospitalist coordinates the patient’s care with their primary physician.
“It works well for all involved,” said Tanner. “The physicians can see more patients in their offices and not have to make rounds in the hospital if they choose.”
Tanner has a medical practice in his hometown of Copperhill, where he practices when not at CCH. He came to be a doctor later in life than many, deciding after several years of being a paramedic that he wanted to take his career a step further.
“I love it,” he said, “and I get along well with the staff, especially in the emergency room, because I’ve been there. I know what they go through.”
Tanner, who has an office in the hospital, also takes care of patients who don’t have a primary physician when they are admitted.
“It’s important to physicians to know that their patients are being taken care of,” he said, “and that’s where I can help.”
