After a hard few days of basketball in the district tournament, the girls’ champion was crowned last Monday.

In the girl’s championship game, Grainger’s undefeated Lady Grizzlies were putting perfection on the line once again and South Greene’s Lady Rebels were standing in their way. Grainger’s first points came from the free throw line but were surpassed immediately by a three pointer from Alora Ricker of South Greene. The two teams played great throughout the remainder of the quarter with Grainger holding a six-point lead at the period’s end, 16-10.

Grainger’s Holly Black opened the scoring up in the second period as she slid down the baseline behind the defense for an easy two. Ashton Wykle, Maelyn Cutshaw and Alora Ricker kept the Lady Rebels in the hunt all with six first half points. Allison Hodge scored seven first quarter points and finished the half leading the Lady Grizzlies with 11 points as the undefeated team led at the half by eight, 28-20.

In the third period, the Lady Rebels made it a one point game with 2:15 showing on the clock. Grainger’s Tailor Morgan then hit a big three that broke the Lady Rebel momentum. With a minute left, the Lady Rebels came back and had the game tied at 35 and that’s where and when the final period began. The two teams battled back and forth with Hodge of the Lady Grizzlies hitting big shot after big shot, cementing her bid for tournament MVP. Perfection was only three minutes and 47 seconds away when a time out stopped the play with a 44-37 Lady Grizzlies lead. The consistent play of the Lady Rebels’ Ricker and Cheyenne Upton kept her team close enough to strike but the 20-10 fourth quarter difference in scoring helped to keep the undefeated streak alive and gave the Lady Grizzlies enough scoring to seal a 55-45 victory and the tournament’s championship.

Allison Hodge scored 19 points and her overall play let her grab MVP honors. Tailor Morgan added 17 points with Holly Black, Laura Johnson, Celeste Stratton and Blake Lamb completing the Lady Grizzlies scoring total. Maelyn Cutshaw and Alora Ricker led South Greene in scoring with Cheyenne Upton and Ashton Wykle rounding out the scoring.

In other action, West Greene’s Lady Buffaloes battled Chuckey-Doak’s Lady Black Knights for third place on Feb. 18 as well. Chuckey-Doak took the lead early in the contest and finished the first half of play in front by a score of 30-24 behind Andi Lamb’s ten points. In the second half, the Lady Black Knights seemed to have an answer to every run that West Greene made and finished with the big victory by a final score of 70-46. Hannah Riddle led Chuckey-Doak with 21 points, Andi Lamb had 16 and Hailey Taylor added 12. For the Lady Buffaloes, Charolotte Murphy was the only one in double figures and scored nineteen points in the loss.

All tournament selections went to: Grainger’s Allison Hodge (MVP), Blake Lamb, Tailor Morgan, Celeste Stratton, Laura Johnson and for South Greene it was Maelyn Cutshaw, Ashton Wykle, Alora Ricker and Cheyenne Upton. Chuckey-Doak’s selections went to Andi Lamb and Hannah Riddle. Charolotte Murphy also received the honor for West Greene.
