The Claiborne County Board of Education met in a short session for its March meeting at Ellen Myers School.

After opening the meeting, minutes of the last meeting and payment of bills were voted approved. The board then approved leave of absence requests and approved line item transfers.

A request from Powell Valley Ministries to use a school bus May 13 and 14 was approved.

The approved the resignations of Justin Michael and Waylon Wilson.

Safety director Bob Oakes asked the board to consider selling a retired bus that had been utilized to its fullest. The board agreed to sell the bus with another unanimous vote.

The school calendar was approved.

The issue of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey was discussed.

“We found a lot of these questions to be intrusive as some of the questions asked students if they had ever thought of suicide,” said board member Tim Duncan. He was assured questions were done anonymously and that they have done them for several years with no issues.

The board approved the issue unanimously.

The tech surplus was discussed. The sale of non-serviceable machines was approved.

The issue of approving buses for a Springdale field trip to Chattanooga passed unanimously.

Permission was granted to begin the “No Child Left Behind” Federal Project applications.

Student board members from Claiborne and Cumberland Gap high schools presented reports. During the CHS report it was announced that Dylan Hoskins was named student of the month and he was received a plaque.

The board announced a revenue increase of $80,462 dollars from the Tennessee Valley Authority rebate program.

“We appreciate everything that everyone is doing to improve our county schools,” said Connie Holdway, director of schools.

The final item was setting up the preliminary budget meetings in April.

The meeting adjourned after approximately 20 minutes.
