The Major George Gibson Chapter NSDAR held a Christmas Tea on Saturday, December 10, 2016. Sharon Harrell, Agnes Marcum, Fay Ramsey, and Myra Richardson hosted this annual event at Marcum’s home near Ewing, Virginia. Other members attending were Charlotte Brooks, Joy Burchett, Andrea Cheak, Judy Hounshell, Rebecca Jones, Linda Lawson, Rebecca Royal, Augusta Sinon, Mary Sprinkle, and Manerva Watson. Also present was guest Carolyn Hensley (Judy Hounshell’s sister).
Before beginning the party, the group voted to donate $100 to “Wreaths Across America” again this year. Our donation will purchase a wreath to be placed on a veteran’s grave at Mountain Home, Tennessee. Charlotte Brooks and Linda Lawson gave Agnes Marcum a cookbook created by the Black’s Fort DAR Chapter with a teapot design on the cover. Marcum collects teapots and has done so much for our chapter. A tentative menu was chosen for next year’s 100th Year Celebration.
Myra Richardson recently took 70 baby hats to the Middlesboro, Kentucky hospital and 33 Christmas hats to the NICU at the UT Hospital in Knoxville. She also took candy for the NICU staff at UT.
Agnes Marcum reported on Native American celebrations. Before the Europeans arrived, the American Indians celebrated the Winter Solstice on December 21st and 22nd. Now they also celebrate Christmas. Most Native Americans have a common religion called Native American Catholic.
The group enjoyed the many delicious foods provided by the four hosts. This was followed by a fancy sock exchange. The hosts gave everyone a scarf as well as a large Christmas stocking containing several useful items collected or handmade by the hosts throughout the year. There was also a drawing for door prizes with each person receiving a prize. A Christmas item or decoration was suggested for next year’s gift exchange.
