The Wilderness Road Kiwanis Club of Harrogate has regular club meetings the second Tuesday and fourth Tuesday of each month at Gondolier in Harrogate. The next meeting is Aug. 25. The meetings will be in the back, glassed-in room of the restaurant at noon. Wilderness Road Kiwanis would like to welcome anyone from the community to attend. Kiwanis is a community service club. The Kiwanis Club’s main focus is to help children in the community. The efforts of Kiwanians support a variety of causes including literacy, leadership, wellness and many other special needs of children. Claiborne County ECDB
The Claiborne County Economic & Community Development Board (ECDB), formerly the Industrial Development Board, will hold its next scheduled meeting at noon on Aug. 14 at The Old Town Grill, 1440 North Broad Street, Tazewell. The public is welcome to attend.
There will be a benefit bike ride for Shawn New to help with medical expenses after a motorcycle accident. The ride will be Aug. 15, with registration from 9-11 a.m. at Old Town Grill (OTG) in Tazewell. Kickstands up at 11 a.m. The fee is $20 per bike. The ride begins and ends at OTG. After the ride returns Old Town Grill will offer burger and fries plates for $5 and all sales will be donated to the event. There will be an auction, Baddest Bike Contest (voted on by the crowd) and Loudest Bike Contest. The Springdale Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual Car, Truck, Tractor and Motorcycle Show Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The show will be held at Springdale Elementary School on US Hwy. 25E South. Admission to the public is free. There is a $15 entry fee for each vehicle, over 100 trophies will be awarded. Vendors are welcome to set up booths for $15 (no food or drink vendors, please). We’ll have good food and good fun so come on out and see the fine vehicles on display that these owners have worked so hard on. All profits go to the Springdale Volunteer Fire Department. Hurst Family and Friends Reunion
The Hurst family and friends reunion will be at Caney Valley American Christian Church on Sept. 19 at 4 p.m. It will be a covered dish meal. All family and friends are invited. Claiborne County Pre-K Program
We are now accepting applications for our 2015-2016 school year. You are required to bring your child’s immunization and physical certificate, valid birth certificate, social security number and proof of income. Children registering at these locations must be four before August 15. The Alpha School is now taking applications for children ages 30 months to four years old. Applications can be picked up at The Alpha School, 910 Alpha Dr., New Tazewell.
Clinch-Powell Head Start Registration
The Clinch-Powell Head Start program is currently taking applications for children 3 and 4 years of age at all Head Start Centers in Claiborne County for the 2015-2016 program year. The child must be 3 years old by August 15, 2015, to be age eligible for the program. Services are provided five days a week with centers open 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Transportation services may be provided dependent upon availability. The program provides services to special needs children, including children with severe disabilities. All services, meals and snacks are provided at no cost to the family. Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO) is sponsoring free saliva-based drug test kits designed to be provided to parents and guardians to keep and use for their children as they feel necessary. The program, Give Me a Reason (GMAR), gives individuals a reason to say no to drugs when tempted by peer pressure or whatever the circumstances are. There are complete information and instructions in each kit. These kits can be obtained at the Stand in the Gap office at 502 Pennlyn Ave. in Cumberland Gap on Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and in at least 44 different distribution points in the tri-state area. Homeless Veterans Reintegration Project
Outreach workers Tommy Brooks and Erin Haverland will be available to assist eligible veterans with enrollment in HVRP. The Homeless Veterans Reintegration Project helps veterans find secure employment through case management, job training, and referrals and links with other local service providers.
