Budget Committee Meetings
The Claiborne County Budget Committee of the Claiborne County Commission will meet in the large courtroom at the Claiborne County Courthouse, located on Main Street in Tazewell, at 6 p.m. on the following days: July 9, July 16, July 21, July 23, July 28 and July 30. The public is invited to attend.
Little League Football
Football sign-up dates for Little League football are July 9, 16 and 23 from 6-8 p.m. at Hardee’s. The league is for ages 5-11 and the cost is $50.

Community Yard Sale
A community yard sale will be held on Main Street in New Tazewell on July 11 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Reserve your spot for $10. Proceeds from the set-up fee will go toward the Main Street Christmas Tree Lighting event.
Claiborne County Historical and Genealogy Society
The Claiborne County Historical and Genealogy Society will hold its regular monthly meeting July 11 at 3:30 p.m. The public is cordially invited. We will be viewing a video made inside the Old Jail. Advance Directive Education Seminar
Juan R. Querubin, with LMU-DCOM, will conduct a seminar on Advance Directives at the Harrogate Senior Citizens Center on July 14 at noon. This is a one-hour seminar about advance directives basics. Library Summer Reading Program
The Claiborne County Public Library’s summer reading program, “Every Hero Has a Story,” began June 9. The program is open to children preschool through 12 years. The schedule of programs is as follows:
July 14 – National History Educational Company will present Heroic Herps with live reptiles and insects.
July 21 – End of Summer Reading Program Party with a clown, balloons, games and face painting.

Harrogate Senior Citizens Center
The Harrogate Senior Citizens Center invites you to explore your inner artist on July 18 at 10 a.m. No experience necessary. The Paint De Craft instructor will guide each person to create their own 11” x 14” work of art based on the chosen art rendition. Admission is $30 per person (cash only) and includes all materials. UT Claiborne County Extension is sponsoring several “Canning College” classes during the upcoming weeks. These classes are designed to teach, through hands-on demonstrations, the “ins and outs” of home canning. Whether you are an experienced canner who has preserved food for years or a novice wanting to learn more about home canning, this is the course for you. Classes will be held on the following dates:
• July 25 at Servolution Health Services in Speedwell from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. If you are interested in registering for the course please call the UT Extension office at 423-626-3742 by July 22.
There is a $60 registration fee to cover the costs of supplies and produce for the class. Participants will take home a dozen canning jars mostly filled with items canned during class. In addition, each participant will receive a copy of So Easy to Preserve, which normally retails for $18. This 375-page book is the definitive source for home food preservation and will serve as the textbook for this course.
This course is open for anyone regardless of race, color, age, national origin, or sex, who would like to learn more about preserving the wonderful produce from your garden or from the farmers market, so you will have home canned foods to eat all year long. 1970 Class Reunion

Claiborne County Pre-K Program
We are now accepting applications for our 2015-2016 school year. You are required to bring your child’s immunization and physical certificate, valid birth certificate, social security number and proof of income. Children registering at these locations must be four before August 15. The Alpha School is now taking applications for children ages 30 months to four years old. Applications can be picked up at The Alpha School, 910 Alpha Dr., New Tazewell.
Clinch-Powell Head Start Registration
The Clinch-Powell Head Start program is currently taking applications for children 3 and 4 years of age at all Head Start Centers in Claiborne County for the 2015-2016 program year. The child must be 3 years old by August 15, 2015, to be age eligible for the program. Services are provided five days a week with centers open 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Transportation services may be provided dependent upon availability. The program provides services to special needs children, including children with severe disabilities. All services, meals and snacks are provided at no cost to the family. Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO) is sponsoring free saliva-based drug test kits designed to be provided to parents and guardians to keep and use for their children as they feel necessary. The program, Give Me a Reason (GMAR), gives individuals a reason to say no to drugs when tempted by peer pressure or whatever the circumstances are. There are complete information and instructions in each kit. These kits can be obtained at the Stand in the Gap office at 502 Pennlyn Ave. in Cumberland Gap on Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and in at least 44 different distribution points in the tri-state area. Homeless Veterans Reintegration Project
Outreach workers Tommy Brooks and Erin Haverland will be available to assist eligible veterans with enrollment in HVRP. The Homeless Veterans Reintegration Project helps veterans find secure employment through case management, job training, and referrals and links with other local service providers. The Wilderness Road Kiwanis Club of Harrogate has regular club meetings the second Tuesday and fourth Tuesday of each month at Gondolier in Harrogate. The meetings will be in the back, glassed-in room of the restaurant at noon. Wilderness Road Kiwanis would like to welcome anyone from the community to attend. Kiwanis is a community service club. The Kiwanis Club’s main focus is to help children in the community.
