Book Signing

There will be a book signing at the Harrogate Bookstation by author Tess Collins on July 16 from noon to 2 p.m. The Bookstation is located at 310 Bristol Road in Harrogate. For more information call 423-869-9777.

Budget Committee Meetings

The Claiborne County Budget Committee of the Claiborne County Commission will meet in the large courtroom at the Claiborne County Courthouse, located on Main Street in Tazewell, at 6 p.m. on the following days: July 16, July 21, July 23, July 28 and July 30. The public is invited to attend.

Little League Football

Football sign-up dates for Little League football are July 16 and 23 from 6-8 p.m. at Hardee’s. The league is for ages 5-11 and the cost is $50.

Chadwell Reunion

A reunion of the descendants of Revolutionary War veteran, CPT David Chadwell will be held July 17-19 at Woodlake Lodge and Country Club, located at the intersection of Lone Mountain Rd. and Woodlake Blvd., Tazewell, TN 37879. Harrogate Senior Citizens Center

The Harrogate Senior Citizens Center invites you to explore your inner artist on July 18 at 10 a.m. No experience necessary. The Paint De Craft instructor will guide each person to create their own 11” x 14” work of art based on the chosen art rendition. Admission is $30 per person (cash only) and includes all materials. Canning Classes

UT Claiborne County Extension is sponsoring several “Canning College” classes during the upcoming weeks. These classes are designed to teach, through hands-on demonstrations, the “ins and outs” of home canning. Whether you are an experienced canner who has preserved food for years or a novice wanting to learn more about home canning, this is the course for you. Classes will be held on the following dates:

• July 25 at Servolution Health Services in Speedwell from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. If you are interested in registering for the course please call the UT Extension office at 423-626-3742 by July 22.

There is a $60 registration fee to cover the costs of supplies and produce for the class. Participants will take home a dozen canning jars mostly filled with items canned during class. In addition, each participant will receive a copy of So Easy to Preserve, which normally retails for $18. This 375-page book is the definitive source for home food preservation and will serve as the textbook for this course.

This course is open for anyone regardless of race, color, age, national origin, or sex, who would like to learn more about preserving the wonderful produce from your garden or from the farmers market, so you will have home canned foods to eat all year long. Hunter Safety Course

AYSO signups

Signups for the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) are coming up soon. Registration forms can be found at Please complete the form online before attending registration. Registration will be held July 25 from 10 a.m. until noon at Walters State Community College in Tazewell and on Aug. 1 from 10-11:30 a.m. at McDonald’s in Middlesboro. The registration fee is $50, which allows the player to participate in both fall 2015 and spring 2016 sessions. The uniform cost is $35 and you receive two shirts, one pair of shorts and two pairs of socks which are reusable until the player outgrows them. Practice will begin in August with games every Saturday from Sept. 12 through Oct. 31.

Stand in the Gap Coalition

The next SIGCO quarterly meeting will be July 25 at 10 a.m. The location has been tentatively set for Duke Hall at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate. For more information, call the SIGCO office at 423-300-1302.

1970 Class Reunion

The Claiborne County High School Class of 1970 reunion will be held Aug. 1 at 6 p.m. at the new Claiborne High School. Please RSVP by July 15 or ASAP. The cost is $20 per person. Committee Meeting

The Claiborne County Buildings, Grounds and Personnel Committee will meet at the Claiborne County Finance Office at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 1.

Cosby Family Reunion

The 16th Annual Cosby Family Reunion will be held Aug. 1 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tazewell Municipal Park, 207 Richardson Rd., Tazewell. The descendents of Rebecca Paris, Richard and Aaron Cosby are encouraged to attend. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. and everyone is asked to bring a covered dish to share and beverages for your family. We invite you to bring friends, photos or mementos and share with the family. Door prizes will be given out after lunch. Claiborne High School Schedule

Claiborne County Schools will begin the 2015-2016 school year Aug. 5. Claiborne High School’s schedule is as follows: all seniors, juniors and sophomores will report to school on Aug. 5 (dismissal at 11:15 a.m.); all freshmen, transfers and new students will report on Aug. 6 (full day); and everyone will report on Aug. 7. Also, freshman students and their parents are invited to our Freshman Experience evening on Aug. 4 from 6-8 p.m. During Freshman Experience, parents and students will meet teachers and administration, see classrooms and learn schedules. Car Show

The Springdale Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual Car, Truck, Tractor and Motorcycle Show Aug. 15 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The show will be held at Springdale Elementary School on US Hwy. 25E South. Admission to the public is free. There is a $15 entry fee for each vehicle, over 100 trophies will be awarded. Vendors are welcome to set up booths for $15 (no food or drink vendors, please). We’ll have good food and good fun so come on out and see the fine vehicles on display that these owners have worked so hard on. All profits go to the Springdale Volunteer Fire Department. Eldridge Reunion

Here we have another opportunity to come to gather as a clan and swap some happy memories with the younger or next generations. Please share your ideas we want to make the experience enjoyable, if only for the next time. Here are the details (as of this printing) for the reunion: The Eldridge Reunion will be held Labor Day Weekend on Sept. 5 at the Tazewell City Park pavilion and kitchen. It will be held from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Please bring a covered dish item to eat, drinks or a dessert. Bring pictures you want to share. We will try to bring a copier and some picture quality paper, if you would like something copied (donation please). There is always email and Facebook. American Legion Post #109

All veterans are invited to attend monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each month. Activities begin at 6 p.m. with a meal. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at 335 Fulkerson Street in Tazewell.

Career Education

Career and Technical Education programs at Claiborne High School and Cumberland Gap High School provide our students the opportunity to participate in a rigorous and relevant career and technical education program that leads to academic achievement and successful employment in a global economy. Claiborne County Historical and Genealogy Society

The Claiborne County Historical and Genealogy Society is located on Old Knoxville Road across from the library. For more information call the office 526-5737. Research hours are Sundays from 1-5 p.m. CCHGS is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the history of Claiborne County. Claiborne County Pre-K Program

We are now accepting applications for our 2015-2016 school year. You are required to bring your child’s immunization and physical certificate, valid birth certificate, social security number and proof of income. Children registering at these locations must be four before August 15. The Alpha School is now taking applications for children ages 30 months to four years old. Applications can be picked up at The Alpha School, 910 Alpha Dr., New Tazewell.

Clinch-Powell Head Start Registration

The Clinch-Powell Head Start program is currently taking applications for children 3 and 4 years of age at all Head Start Centers in Claiborne County for the 2015-2016 program year. The child must be 3 years old by August 15, 2015, to be age eligible for the program. Services are provided five days a week with centers open 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Transportation services may be provided dependent upon availability. The program provides services to special needs children, including children with severe disabilities. All services, meals and snacks are provided at no cost to the family. Drug Testing

Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO) is sponsoring free saliva-based drug test kits designed to be provided to parents and guardians to keep and use for their children as they feel necessary. The program, Give Me a Reason (GMAR), gives individuals a reason to say no to drugs when tempted by peer pressure or whatever the circumstances are. There are complete information and instructions in each kit. These kits can be obtained at the Stand in the Gap office at 502 Pennlyn Ave. in Cumberland Gap on Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and in at least 44 different distribution points in the tri-state area. Homeless Veterans Reintegration Project

Outreach workers Tommy Brooks and Erin Haverland will be available to assist eligible veterans with enrollment in HVRP. The Homeless Veterans Reintegration Project helps veterans find secure employment through case management, job training, and referrals and links with other local service providers. Outreach workers can arrange visits with veterans in outlying areas who are unable to travel to the program office. In Knoxville, call 865-546-4813 for more information.

Keck Reunion

It’s that time again – the third Saturday in July and time for the John Guider and Conrad Keck family reunion. All descendants of the Keck family will gather July 18 at 10.30 a.m. at the Pleasant Point school house. Friends and neighbors are all invited to join in for lunch and fun.

Kiwanis Club

The Wilderness Road Kiwanis Club of Harrogate has regular club meetings the second Tuesday and fourth Tuesday of each month at Gondolier in Harrogate. The meetings will be in the back, glassed-in room of the restaurant at noon. Wilderness Road Kiwanis would like to welcome anyone from the community to attend. Kiwanis is a community service club. The Kiwanis Club’s main focus is to help children in the community. The efforts of Kiwanians support a variety of causes including literacy, leadership, wellness and many other special needs of children. Shoemaker Cemetery

Donations are needed for the upkeep of Shoemaker Cemetery. If you have loved ones whose final resting place is in this beautiful cemetery, your help is greatly needed. Thompson Chapel Cemetery

Town of Tazewell BMA

The board meetings for the Board of Mayor and Aldermen of the Town of Tazewell are conducted at Tazewell City Hall at 1830 Main Street, the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. The BMA workshops are on Wednesday prior to the scheduled board meeting at 6 p.m. as needed. The public is invited to attend all meetings of the board.

Tri-State Christian Academy
