LEGO Club at Library

A LEGO Club is meeting at the Claiborne County Public Library. All ages are welcome to attend. The club meets on the second Monday and fourth Thursday of each month from 4-5 p.m. to create, build and express your imagination with LEGOs. All LEGO supplies will be provided by the library. No sign up is required – just show up for a building good time. The library is located at 1304 Old Knoxville Road in Tazewell, below Walters State. For more information call 423-626-5414.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance

The East Tennessee Human Resource Agency (ETHRA) be accepting applications for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) for Claiborne County. You must call ETHRA’S Energy Line at 1-844-309-0416 to make an appointment. Applications will be taken at the ETHRA office located at 1120 Church St., Suite 2, Tazewell. The following information is required on the day of your appointment: Proof of all household income dated 2016 (last eight weeks of check stubs or social security award letter for 2016, or income printout from DHS.) Bank statements cannot be accepted. Government issued ID for applicant only, social security cards for all household members, 12 month printout from your utility company that shows usage and dollar amount along with name, address and account number, fuel receipts from last winter. The sponsor of this program is the Tennessee Housing Development Agency. The goal is to provide assistance to the low-income households to offset the high rise of home energy costs.

Cumberland Gap Meetings

The regular monthly meetings for the Cumberland Gap Historical Zoning Commission will be held the first Tuesday (following the first Monday) of every month at 7 p.m. at the Cumberland Gap Town Hall, 330 Colwyn Street Cumberland Gap (if no items are to be discussed a meeting will not be held). The public is invited to attend.

The regular monthly meetings for the Cumberland Gap Planning Commission will be held the second Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. at the Cumberland Gap Town, 330 Colwyn Street Cumberland Gap (if no items are to be discussed a meeting will not be held). The public is invited to attend.

The regular monthly meetings for the Town of Cumberland Gap Board of Mayor and Alderman will be held the first Monday evening of every month at 7 p.m. at the Cumberland Gap Town Hall, 330 Colwyn Street, Cumberland Gap. The Cumberland Gap Beer Board meeting follows the board meeting each month. At least one week before the regular scheduled meeting the board meets in a study session to review and finalize the agenda. That meeting starts at 6 p.m. and is usually held the Monday before the regular scheduled meeting. Both meetings are open to the public.

Diabetes Workshop

The Claiborne County Health Department and the University of Tennessee Extension will offer a free Take Charge of Your Diabetes Workshop beginning July 28. The six-week program is designed for people with diabetes and caregivers to learn basic skills necessary to self-mange and work effectively with their health care professionals. Classes will be held at 10 a.m. every Thursday. The program is conducted by two leaders certified by Stanford University Diabetes Self-Management Program master trainers. Alzheimer’s Support Group

Time change: Smoky Mountain Home Health & Hospice, Alzheimer’s Support Group will meet the last Thursday of each month at 3 p.m. at Laurel Manor Nursing Facility. The next meeting will be July 28. Relay For Life

The Relay for Life of Claiborne County will be hosting a Team Captain’s Meeting on July 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the First Century Bank Operations Center in Tazewell. Teams will be signing up for campsites, concession, bank night and much more. For more information call 865-771-1045.

Line Dancing

Summer Nights Line Dancing at Pine Mountain State Resort Park will be held from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on July 29, Aug. 5 and 12; and from 7-8 p.m. on Aug. 19 on the lodge basketball court. Learn basic line dancing steps and dance to some of your favorite tunes. The instructor-led class, held with the Broken Spur Dance Club, is $5 per person. Relay For Life Bike Run

It’s time again for the Relay for Life Bike Run sponsored by Claiborne Medical Center and Covenant Health. The ride begins at Old Town Grill in Tazewell. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. and kickstands will go up at 1 p.m. The cost is $10 per rider. There will be T-shirts available for purchase for $10, door prizes will be given out during the ride and there will be an auction after the ride. Chris Ellis & the Weekenders will be playing from 5-7 p.m. then Bad Decision will take the stage at 8 p.m.

CCHS Class of 1966

FSA County Committee Elections

FSA (Farm Service Agency) County Committee Elections will be held this year in Local Administrative Areas (LAAs) No. 2 and No. 3. LAA No. 2 includes the Claiborne County communities of Bacchus, Sandlick, Harrogate, Big Spring Union and Midway. LAA No. 3 consists of Claiborne County communities Cedar Fork, Sycamore, Lone Mountain, Springdale and Union Chapel. On June 15, postcards were mailed to each eligible voter in these communities with information on how to nominate a candidate. Nomination petitions can be accepted at the County Office through Aug. 1 either in person or postmarked. FSA encourages all eligible producers to nominate themselves, or another eligible producer, to run for office. Wing Fling Festival

Cosby Family Reunion

The 17th annual Cosby Family Reunion will be held Aug. 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tazewell Municipal Park, 207 Richardson Rd. Tazewell. The descendants of Rebecca, Paris, Richard and Aaron Cosby are encouraged to attend. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. and everyone is asked to bring a covered dish and beverages for your family. CCSWA Board Meeting

The Claiborne County Solid Waste Authority Board will meet for the regular monthly meeting on Aug. 8 at 6 p.m. in the large courtroom at the Claiborne County Courthouse.

Dining With Diabetes

The UT-TSU Extension Claiborne County will offer Dining with Diabetes classes at 10 a.m. Aug. 9, 16, 23 and 30 at Servolution Health Services at the old Powell Valley Vocational School. Classes will last approximately 90 minutes to two hours. Classes are open to anyone with diabetes, family members of diabetics or anyone at risk for diabetes. You will learn how to prepare quick and healthy meals that taste good. Recipes will be demonstrated and participants will have the opportunity to taste each one. Recipe booklets and handouts will be given to each participant. Classes are $20 and covers the cost of food that will be demonstrated. Class size is limited. Foster Parent Information

Bailey Reunion

The Bailey Reunion will be Aug. 14 at Springdale School, beginning at 11:30 a.m. Please bring a covered dish if you can. Meal will begin around 12:30 p.m. Please help us spread the word to other family members and friends.

Welch Family Reunion

Friends and family of the Bill and Lottie Welch family are invited to attend the Welch Family Reunion. The reunion will be held Aug. 14 at the Powell Valley Community Center. The doors open at 11 a.m., lunch will be served at noon.

BBQ Dinner

Shawanee Lodge No. 546 F&AM will host a BBQ Dinner from 4-7 p.m. on Aug. 19 — eat-in or carry-out. Everyone is welcome.

CCHS Class of ‘81 Reunion

It’s hard to believe that it has been 35 years! Please come and reminisce about the good old days! Car, Truck, Tractor, Motorcycle Show

The Springdale Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual Car Show Aug. 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The show will be held at Springdale Elementary School on US Hwy. 25E South. Admission to the public is free. There is a $15 entry fee for each vehicle; over 125 trophies will be awarded. Vendors are welcome to set up booths for a $15 fee (no food or drink vendors please). There will be good food and good fun, so come on out and see the fine vehicles on display that these owners have worked so hard on. All profits go to the Springdale Volunteer Fire Department. Catfish Dinner

Shawanee Lodge No. 546 F&AM will host a Catfish Dinner from 4-7 p.m. on Sept. 9 — eat-in or carry-out. Everyone is welcome.

Dulcimer Convention

The 40th annual Great American Dulcimer Convention will be held at Pine Mountain State Resort Park Sept. 23 and 24 featuring free learning workshops during the day on Saturday and must-see evening concert on Friday and Saturday. American Legion Post #109

All veterans are invited to attend monthly meetings on the second Tuesday of each month. Activities begin at 6 p.m. with a meal. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at 335 Fulkerson Street in Tazewell.

Bee Friends

Interested in beekeeping and meeting beekeepers? Whether you are looking for information or just curious, you are invited to join us at BEE FRIENDS, a local beekeeping group. We meet monthly, on the first Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at the Tazewell Campus of Walters State Community College in the auditorium. There will be a sign at the door from the parking lot. Beginner’s Computer Class

The Claiborne County Public Library is hosting a beginner’s computer class at the Harrogate Senior Citizens Center every other Friday at 1 p.m. For more information call the library at 423-626-5414.

Story Time at Library

The Claiborne County Public Library will be having a Story Time every week in the Children’s Room. Story Time will be held on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. with books, music and crafts. Children of all ages are welcome. Call the library at 423-626-5414 for more information.

Free Tech Classes at Library

Need help with technology? Would you like to learn more about your mobile device? You can now schedule an appointment at the Claiborne County Public Library for free help sessions. The library will be able to help with the following: Computers, tablets, phones, use of apps, etc.

Come prepared with: The device you need help with; any necessary usernames and passwords needed to access your device and/or accounts; the device fully charged, if not, please bring a charger; questions and/or concerns about your device.

The library staff will not: Run diagnostics; troubleshoot or fix any malfunctioning devices (unless related to library services); run antivirus scans; computer maintenance; replace parts on a device; credit card transactions.

Drug Test Kits Available

Free Saliva Based Drug Testing Kits are available, provided and sponsored through UNITE and (SIGCO) Stand in the Gap Coalition. Give Me a Reason (GMAR) is designed for parents/guardians to use to talk with their children and randomly test them, which gives them a reason to say “no” when tempted or offered drugs. They can be obtained at 44 different distribution points throughout tri-state area & at the SIGCO office, located at 502 Pennlyn Ave., Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. Arthur Community Center Association

The Arthur Community Center Restoration Organization has regular meetings the second Thursday and fourth Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Arthur Community Center. All residents of Arthur Community are encouraged to attend. The ACCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration of the Arthur Community Center for the public to use for meetings, family reunions, wedding receptions, etc.

Homeless Veterans Reintegration Project

Outreach workers Tommy Brooks and Erin Haverland will be available to assist eligible veterans with enrollment in HVRP. The Homeless Veterans Reintegration Project helps veterans find secure employment through case management, job training, and referrals and links with other local service providers. Outreach workers can arrange visits with veterans in outlying areas who are unable to travel to the program office.Veterans Can Help is located at 511 Broadway, Knoxville, TN 37917. Free Spay and Neuter

The Animal Welfare League of Claiborne County is sponsoring a free spay/neuter for dogs and cats in the Claiborne County area for families with income less than $30,000 per year, depending upon the number of people in the household. Pick up applications at Harrogate Hospital for Animals, Russell Veterinary Services or Rowland Veterinary Services. You can also request spay applications at [email protected] . Complete application, including proof of income and mail to AWLCC, 200 Hatfield Morgan Lane, New Tazewell, TN 37825 or scan/email to email address above. Be sure to include a phone number.

Town of Tazewell BMA

The board meetings for the Board of Mayor and Aldermen of the Town of Tazewell are conducted at Tazewell City Hall at 1830 Main Street, the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. The BMA workshops are on Wednesday prior to the scheduled board meeting at 6 p.m. as needed. The public is invited to attend all meetings of the board.

Town of Tazewell Brush Pickup

Brush pickup for the residents of the Town of Tazewell is resuming. A maximum quantity of two brush piles 4 ft. wide x 4 ft. tall x 10 ft. long will be collected from each household per visit. Brush and limbs shall be neatly stacked in 4 ft. x 4 ft. piles with the ends facing the same direction. Exceptions: Leaves or other debris may not be mixed with brush. No stumps will be picked up or limbs larger than 6 inches in diameter. Brush must be brought to the curbside and not placed in the street or on sidewalks. Lumber or construction waste materials will not be collected. No commercial, industrial, construction, or land clearing projects are included in the brush collection program.
