A two-vehicle crash resulted in the death of two people around midnight Saturday.
According to a report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Gregory D. Smith, 47, of Tazewell, was traveling northbound on U.S. Hwy. 25E around 12:11 a.m. and attempted to negotiate a curve at the intersection with Tom Ball Road.
A second vehicle, driven by John D. Bray, 22, of New Tazewell, was traveling southbound on U.S. Hwy. 25E, also attempting to negotiate a curve. The report states that Bray’s vehicle traveled across the northbound lanes of U.S. Hwy. 25E and struck a guard rail. The vehicle continued to travel north in the southbound lanes, striking the Smith vehicle head-on.
Smith and his passenger, his wife Kimberly L. Smith, 50, both died as the result of the crash.
Bray was injured, according to the report, but the extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.
None of the people involved were wearing seat belts, according to the THP, but would have made a difference the report states.
According to the report, criminal charges are pending.
The investigating officer is Trooper David Good.
