Budget Committee Meetings
The Claiborne County Budget Committee will meet in the large courtroom at the Claiborne County Courthouse, located on Main Street in Tazewell, at 6 p.m. on the following days: June 16, June 18, June 23 and June 25. The public is invited to attend.
Cave Spring Cemetery
A special meeting is being called for the Cave Spring Cemetery Association for June 19 at 7 p.m. in the Cave Spring Church. All interested please come to this meeting.
Claiborne County Correctional Partnership Act Committee
The CCCPAC (commonly known as the Jail Committee) will meet at the training room of the Justice Center at 4:30 p.m. on June 25.
Claiborne County Economic & Community Development Board
The Claiborne County Economic & Community Development Board (formerly the Industrial Development Board) will hold its next scheduled meeting at noon on June 12 at The Old Town Grill, 1440 North Broad Street, Tazewell, TN 37879. The public is welcome to attend.
Claiborne County Emergency Communications District
The CCECD will meet in regular session on June 12 at 11:30 a.m. at the Claiborne County Justice Center training room.
Claiborne County Historical and Genealogy Society
The Claiborne County Historical and Genealogy Society will hold its regular monthly meeting June 20 at 3:30 p.m. This is a week later than usual as we will have a booth at the Genealogy Jamboree in Cumberland Gap June 11, 12 and 13. The public is cordially invited and election of officers will be held. The society is located on Old Knoxville Road across from the library. For more information call the office 526-5737. Claiborne County Pre-K Program
We are now accepting applications for our 2015-2016 school year. You are required to bring your child’s immunization and physical certificate, valid birth certificate, social security number and proof of income. Children registering at these locations must be four before August 15. The Alpha School is now taking applications for children ages 30 months to four years old. Applications can be picked up at The Alpha School, 910 Alpha Dr., New Tazewell.
Claiborne County Rescue Squad
The Claiborne County Rescue Squad will be doing their annual door-to-door picture fundraiser starting June 8. Anyone who participates with a $20 or more contribution will receive one free 8×10 family portrait. You will be contacted at your residence. Thank you for your support.
Clinch-Powell Head Start Registration
The Clinch-Powell Head Start program is currently taking applications for children 3 and 4 years of age at all Head Start Centers in Claiborne County for the 2015-2016 program year. The child must be 3 years old by August 15, 2015, to be age eligible for the program. Services are provided five days a week with centers open 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Transportation services may be provided dependent upon availability. The program provides services to special needs children, including children with severe disabilities. All services, meals and snacks are provided at no cost to the family. ETHRA Community Action Agency, funded in part by an agreement with the Department of Agriculture, will distribute USDA Commodities for Claiborne County on this date: Friday, June 12, at the Tri-State Growers (Farmers Market), Tazewell, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. As a reminder to Clairfield residents you can only pick up commodities in Tazewell. You will need a commodity card to pick up commodities. The current commodity cards are salmon. Please call the office at 973-3669 extension 5304, 5305 and 5313 to make sure staff is available to take commodity applications if you don’t have a card. No applications will be taken at the Friday distribution. The ETHRA staff will be working out of the office during the week of the commodity distribution and may not be available for applications. We will be at the distribution site during the above hours or until the food supply is gone. Tazewell distribution will be Friday only. Please bring a box or bag.
Stand in the Gap Coalition (SIGCO) is sponsoring free saliva-based drug test kits designed to be provided to parents and guardians to keep and use for their children as they feel necessary. The program, Give Me a Reason (GMAR), gives individuals a reason to say no to drugs when tempted by peer pressure or whatever the circumstances are. There are complete information and instructions in each kit. These kits can be obtained at the Stand in the Gap office at 502 Pennlyn Ave. in Cumberland Gap on Tuesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and in at least 44 different distribution points in the tri-state area. Every Hero has a Story – come join a week-long fun event at the Harrogate Book Station, June 8-12. The program is for ages 3-12 and will be held from 9 a.m. until noon each day. The Book Station is located at 310 Bristol Road in Harrogate. You must complete the program to receive a certificate. You’re encouraged to come early to register. Homeless Veterans Reintegration Project
Outreach workers Tommy Brooks and Erin Haverland will be available to assist eligible veterans with enrollment in HVRP. The Homeless Veterans Reintegration Project helps veterans find secure employment through case management, job training, and referrals and links with other local service providers. The Wilderness Road Kiwanis Club of Harrogate has regular club meetings the second Tuesday and fourth Tuesday of each month at Gondolier in Harrogate. The meetings will be in the back, glassed-in room of the restaurant at noon. Wilderness Road Kiwanis would like to welcome anyone from the community to attend. Kiwanis is a community service club. The Kiwanis Club’s main focus is to help children in the community. The efforts of Kiwanians support a variety of causes including literacy, leadership, wellness and many other special needs of children. Library Summer Reading Program
The Claiborne County Public Library’s summer reading program, “Every Hero Has a Story,” began June 9. The program is open to children preschool through 12 years. The schedule of programs is as follows:
June 16 – Hero stories with Sam the Turtle and magician Barry Mitchell.
June 23 – Magician Michael Messing will be performing.
June 30 – Balloon artist, clown and storyteller David Claunch will be performing.
July 7 – The Zoomobile from the Knoxville Zoo will be at the Library.
July 14 – National History Educational Company will present Heroic Herps with live reptiles and insects.
July 21 – End of Summer Reading Program Party with a clown, balloons, games and face painting.

Light the Night 5K
The Physician Assistant Program class of 2016 at LMU-DCOM will present the Light the Night 5K RACE on June 19. Registration begins at 7:30 p.m. and the race begins at 8:30 p.m. at the Harrogate City Park, located at 150 TN-63, Harrogate, Tenn. All proceeds from the race benefit go to Second Harvest Food Bank of East Tennessee, which will benefit Food for Kids. Registration for adults is $35 before April 30 and $40 afterward. Youth 18 and under may register for $20 before April 30 or $25 afterward. Pudge’s Summer Music Festival
Gospel, bluegrass, country and rock will be played at Pudge’s Summer Music Festival, scheduled for June 13. The board meetings for the Board of Mayor and Aldermen of the Town of Tazewell are conducted at Tazewell City Hall at 1830 Main Street, the second Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. The BMA workshops are on Wednesday prior to the scheduled board meeting at 6 p.m. as needed.
