LMU-CVM professor serves as consultant to UN

Gary Vroegindewey, DVM, MSS, DACVPM, Director of One Health Program at Lincoln Memorial University-College of Veterinary Medicine (LMU-CVM) traveled to Vienna, Austria in May to present research to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), an organization within the United Nations’ family.

Serving as an expert consultant to the IAEA, Vroegindewey assisted the development of standards, guidelines and training for National Veterinary Services. The multi-year program will strengthen National Veterinary Services capacity to prepare for and respond to nuclear and radiological events.

Vroegindewey serves as chair of the OIE World Organization for Animal Health ad hoc Group on Natural Disaster Risk Reduction and Management in Relation to Animal Health and Welfare and Veterinary Public Health. While in Vienna, Vroegindewey presented research about European and West Asia Veterinary Services at IAEA.

“Dr. Vroegindewey’s work on the one health framework and research on global health initiatives is to be commended,” LMU-CVM Dean Glen Hoffsis, DVM, MS, DACVIM said. “Veterinarians play a critical role in public health and giving students the opportunity to learn about one health initiatives from an international expert will help them better be prepared for their future careers.”
