There seemed to be a tangible spirit of gladness as well-wishers filled the large courtroom of the Claiborne Courthouse last Thursday to witness the official swearing-in of three Claiborne school board members and the new county assessor of property.

The August 4 election netted a housecleaning of sorts for the school board, with three of its seven seats open for battle.

When the dust settled, fourth district board member Brian Pendleton was replaced by Justin Cosby, who spent a good bit of time taking his campaign ‘door to door,’ managing to visit with every registered voter in his district.

Wade Breeding beat out longtime seventh district board member Sam Owens in a tight race that literally handed the seat to Breeding with just a few votes to spare.

Former first district board member Dot Patterson, who chose not to run for reelection, gave up her seat to Shane K. Bunch. Election results show Bunch a clear winner over hopefuls Elizabeth Fugate and Charlie Shell.

Shane Breeding became the new county assessor of property in a race pitting him against Judy Mundy Myers in a fairly tight battle.

County road superintendent Ron Pittman was not present during the official proceedings. He chose to have his oath of office administered privately, according to Circuit Court Judge John McAfee.

Election results show Pittman pulling neatly ahead of his competitors, beating out Dane Poore, Bill Keck and Mike Sharp for the office.
