Officers with the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office were at both Cumberland Gap High School and HY Livesay Middle School In Harrogate as daylight broke to secure the premises after some online threats, says Sheriff David Ray.
According to Ray, he and officers worked on some alleged threats that were reported to him and other officials through the night and made sure the premises were secure before students arrived at the schools this morning.
The online threats began Tuesday night, he said, with people posting on Facebook and texting the alleged threats that clowns were going to “shoot up the school.” There were also rumored sightings of clowns in several places around the area, including clowns with baseball bats at Tuttle’s store on Hwy. 63.
People dressed as clowns have been spotted in different areas throughout the region in different states, with some reportedly trying to lure children into wooded or otherwise dangerous areas. The reported sightings have caused several copycats.
Ray confirmed that a person of interest has been taken into custody and is at the Claiborne County Justice Center. It wasn’t confirmed why the person, a juvenile, was detained and Ray would not confirm whether the juvenile is male or female.
The person’s parents were on the way to the Justice Center, he said.
“The threats were taken seriously and we’ve had a team of officers at Cumberland Gap High School and Livesay to secure the premises,” Ray said. “Nothing was found.”
Ray stated that officials are currently in the middle of the investigation and more information would be forthcoming. We will have more information as it becomes available.
