On Thursday, afternoon officer David Sutton of the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office was at Wendy’s Lakeside Market when he spotted a female suspect whom officers had been looking for since May.
On May 6, officers went to 1292 State Highway 33 to serve warrants on Ashley Ausmus, 23, for running from police through a school zone the day before.
Sgt. Eddie Hurley and Deputy Davy Cole entered the home with consent from her husband to search for her and found Ausmus hiding inside a closet. When the officers attempted to arrest her on the warrants, she began fighting with them.
When they were finally able to apprehend her and place her in the back of the cruiser, she began attempting to kick the back window out of the car. The officers then got her out of the car to calm her down before taking her to jail.
She was booked in for the warrants and was charged additionally with Assault on a Police Officer and Resisting Arrest. She did not show up for her court date on May 21 and Failure to Appear warrants were executed for her arrest.
On Thursday, Deputy Sutton spotted Ausmus at Wendy’s Lakeside and called for additional back up to his location.
When the officers arrived and approached Ausmus, she took off on foot.
She ran down Lakeside Road, across Highway 33 South, down an embankment, jumped into Norris Lake and swam across the cove.
Sgt. Eddie Hurley posted on the Cape Norris side of the lake; Deputy Cole went to Cedar Grove Marina and borrowed a boat driven by Cedar Grove Marina employee, Steve Hudson, while Deputy Sutton posted on the Highway 33 side of the cove in case Ausmus swam back to the shore.
She swam across the cove to the Cape Norris side as Deputy Cole directed Sgt. Hurley on her location. As she made it to the shore and saw Sgt. Hurley, she turned back around and jumped back into the lake.
Deputy Cole exited the boat on the Cape Norris Side and Sgt. Hurley entered the boat and after twenty-five minutes, Sgt. Hurley and Steve Hudson were finally able to apprehend her inside the boat.
She was booked into the Claiborne County Jail and charged with Stop, Halt, Frisk and seven counts of Failure to Appear.
A bond has not been set and her court date is set for August 13.
