Bernice Tennyson will be recognized in Saturday’s Christmas parade as an Honored Merchant.
Tennyson opened Hair Etc. in New Tazewell in 1994. She has been a hairdresser for 30 years, something she credits her mother for.
“My parents had six children — five girls and one boy. My mother said, ‘Surely one of my girls will learn how to do hair,’” she said.
Tennyson received her training as a student at Claiborne County High School.
She said she has enjoyed the many opportunities she’s had over the years, especially the opportunity to share in the lives of so many people.
“The bond begins with the first haircut, the prom, then a wedding,” she said. “The cycle begins again with their children. Then there’s the last time, at death, when I do their hair. I’ve been a counselor, family, friend and hairdresser.”
Tennyson is grateful to many others for their support over the years.
“I stepped out on faith 15 years ago, and having the support of my family, friends and customers has made it possible,” she said. “I thank my family for standing by me through the long hours and my clientele for the many, many years of dedication they’ve shown.”
Tennyson has three children, Lynze Bergman, Randall Wilder and Emily Tennyson. She is the proud grandmother of Olivia Grace and Caden Andrew Bergman.
