The Claiborne High School Basketball Camp of Champions got under way July 20 and finished July 24.
This basketball camp is a favorite of young athletes all the way up to the final years of middle school. Coach Michael Brooks and Brian O’Dell make the camp fun for the players while also making sure that the campers learn and advance.
“We absolutely focus on the little things, the fundamentals but at the same time we want to see the kids grow on the basketball court and learn some of the things that we will teach even here at the high school level,” said Brooks.
Brooks added, “Although numbers were slightly down, 25 players did attend the camp. We were impressed at the quality of players that was seen during the week and think that they all took coaching and became better players over the course of the week.”
Brooks then gave credit to the camp sponsors, “We cannot do this without the help of our dedicated parents and sponsors including Minton Family Dentistry, First Century Bank, Commercial Bank, Home Federal Bank, Dr. Steven Malone O.D., R&R Drilling, Duncan Lumber, All Star Trophy, Hair Etc. and AE Photography.”
After a long week of fundamentals and developing more advanced basketball skills the players enjoyed a Friday filled with individual and team competitions including the now-famous slam dunk competition for the kids of all ages. The joy of seeing the “ballers” rising to the rim and creating those spare of the moment dunks always brings smiles and laughter to everyone in the gymnasium.
Awards and shirts were also handed out and the players all enjoyed the friendly competition and learning about the ins and outs of the game of basketball.
