A local young man is fighting cancer and the community is coming together for a benefit.
On December 10, the Powell Valley and Speedwell athletic community is having an alumni men’s and women’s basketball game fundraiser at the old Powell Valley High School gymnasium.
The games and evening’s activities will benefit Tyler Nelson. He has osteosarcoma and is at St. Jude’s in Memphis. According to the American Cancer Society, osteosarcoma is the most common type of cancer that develops in bone. Most osteosarcomas occur in children and young adults.
He is expected to be at St. Jude’s for quite some time undergoing treatment. Tyler is the son of John and Mickki Nelson.
In addition to the basketball game the event will have cake walks, food, auctions and much more. If you would like to participate contact Jeremiah Bean at 423-912-1857. Donations or items to be auctioned off can also be dropped off at Marvin’s Tire Barn or given to Bean in person or by mail. Bean’s address is 4109 Old Highway 63 Speedwell, TN 37870.
“This is a great way to help a family in need,” said Bean. “Remember that this could be your family or child and you could be in their shoes. Thanks in advance and I know the Powell Valley community will make this great as they always do. Call or text with any questions.”
Several people have stepped up already to participate in the alumni game and the community is urged to watch those former players take the court one more time for such a great cause. All Powell Valley alumni players are invited to participate and the public is encouraged to attend.
The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the women will begin their game at 6 p.m.
