The Claiborne Bulldogs welcomed the Washburn Pirates into town for basketball action January 3. The Bulldogs have struggled to close out games which they have led lately, and coach Brian O’Dell wanted them to finish strong during the final period but to his delight, they didn’t need the strong final period to get a win over the Pirates.
Claiborne took a 21-13 first period and turned it into a 35-22 halftime advantage. The first period belonged to Houston Hatfield; he dropped in ten points and set the stage for a great team performance. Hatfield was tough in the paint and around the top of the key. Jacob Williams came off the bench and was impressive also scoring double figures.
Feeding off the momentum that Hatfield started the Bulldogs placed 29 points on the scoreboard during the third period and pulled away to a 72-49 victory with 11 players recording scores. This victory was a team effort.
Claiborne was led in scoring by Hatfield who finished with 14 having limited second half minutes. Jacob Williams dropped in 11 points. Ty Stone had nine, Jacob Runions eight, Lucas Manning finished with seven, Kade Beeler and Hunter Rosenbalm both finished with six points. Also recording scores were Andrew Coots, Evan Poore, Elijah Beason and Evan Ickes.
