The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has made a few changes to the upcoming 2015-16 deer season. The statewide bag limit for antlered bucks has been lowered to two antlered deer statewide, no more than one antlered deer may be taken per day.
The only way the bag limit of two antlered bucks may be exceeded is: If bucks are taken on T.W.R.A. or N.W.R. managed hunts where bucks are noted as bonus deer. Hunters are encouraged to go online at http://tn.gov/twra/article/deer-seasons and check the management area regulations, bonus deer status and overall bag limits.
In the Unit B Area which includes Claiborne County, the dates for archery hunting are as follows: The first archery segment is scheduled for Sept. 26-Oct. 30, and after a short break will continue Nov. 2-Nov. 6. The antlerless bag limit is four.
The combined muzzle loader and archery season is scheduled for Nov. 7-20. The antlerless bag limit is one.
The combined gun, muzzle loader and archery season is scheduled for Nov. 21-Jan. 3. The antlerless bag limit and dates vary statewide. Hunters are encouraged to visit the website, or pick up a copy of the hunting guide to verify antlerless hunt dates and bag limits.
The young sportsman hunt dates are Oct. 31-Nov. 1 and Jan. 9-10. Check the website for bag limits and other regulations.
Red deer hunting includes the portion of Claiborne County south of the Powell River. Hunters must submit any red deer harvested for biological sample. Outside of deer season, red deer may be taken after requesting a free permit from the T.W.R.A. Region four office — there is no limit on antlered or antlerless.
You can take red deer to Cunningham Slaughter House in Tazewell. They’re open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and you can reach them at 423-626-6666. If for some reason no one is available, call the Region 4 office at (423) 587-7037 for further instructions.
