LMU baseball summer league update

Harrogate, Tenn. — A bevy of student-athletes are representing the Lincoln Memorial University baseball team in summer leagues all across the eastern half of the United States. Here’s an update on how those players have fared so far.

Rising senior and right-handed pitcher Wes Todd (Franklin, Tenn.) has been dominant on the mound in two starts for the Herndon Braves, a member of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League in Herndon, Va. Todd is 2-0 with a league-leading 11 1/3 innings pitched, scattering 11 hits without a run allowed over that span. He is one of four players in the league yet to yield an earned run.

Todd is paired on the Herndon Braves staff with junior Timmy Wages (Moline, Ill.), who missed all of the 2015 campaign with an arm injury. Wages has made three appearances and tossed 5 2/3 innings with relatively solid results in his return to the bump, striking out six and allowing five hits during that stretch.

Rising sophomore Logan Augustine (Carbondale, Iowa) has collected two hits and drawn five free passes in nine official at-bats for the Braves, driving in a pair of runs.

Right-handed pitcher Brandon Jean (Franklin, Tenn.), outfielder Mason Ewers (Kingsport, Tenn.) and incoming junior college transfer Daniel Ferguson (Mineral Ridge, Ohio) are also competing in the Ripken League, as they are featured on the Vienna Riverdogs roster.

Jean, who went 4-4 last season while serving as LMU’s top weekend starter, has thrown four innings over three appearances. He has served up only two hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Ewers is batting .235 with a pair of doubles and two walks, while Ferguson is batting .273 with a triple and an RBI.

Over in Hampton, Va., rising seniors Danny Valdez (Orlando, Fla.) and Grant Painter (Knoxville, Tenn.) are competing in the Coastal Plain League for the Peninsula Pilots.

Painter, went 5-5 as the No.2 weekend starter for the Railsplitters last season – has made three appearances with two starts for the Pilots. The Knoxville, Tenn. native is 1-0 with eight strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings pitched. Valdez, meanwhile, has contributed five hits, a double and a walk to a Pilots offense that has accumulated 107 runs in 18 games.

Pitchers Chase Randolph (Harriman, Tenn.), Jake Watkins (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Drew Lyles (Cleveland, Tenn.) have spent the first bit of the summer with the Owensboro Oilers of the Ohio Valley League.

Randolph has been the best of that bunch with three strikeouts and a 1-0 record over five innings. Watkins and Lyles both struggled in their first outings with the Oilers, but Watkins has fanned three batters in five total innings.
