The New Tazewell Little League All Star teams are once again enjoying success and have won the District 6 tournament banner once again after defeating Maryville.
These two teams met on the diamond July 1 at Claiborne High School. The New Tazewell All Stars began the game on fire at the plate. Everyone on the team provided important at-bats as they went through the lineup and more. After one half inning of play, the NTAS enjoyed a 10-0 lead.
Maryville desperately needed to get on track in their half of the inning. They managed one run but that let them know that they had a chance to chip away at the lead.
During the second inning, the NTAS coaches were less aggressive on the base pads and the team only managed a couple insurance runs to lead 12-1.
Maryville loaded the bases during their half of the second inning but failed to plate a much needed run.
The home team was even less aggressive at the plate and on the bases as in previous innings and the result was no runs placed on the board. Maryville also couldn’t plate a run during the third and the drought continued for both teams throughout the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, the coaching staff of the NTAS told them that they were going to let them run the bases hard again and try to get some more runs. It was 19-1 when Maryville came up to the plate. Three quick outs ended the game and for the third year in a row the New Tazewell had won the District 6 championship and punched their ticket to the state competition in Jonesboro, Tennessee.
Jonathan Beason is the manager of the New Tazewell senior league team and had this to say about their performance, “I’m really proud of this team and in my opinion this team gives us the best chance of moving on in the state tournament. Overall, I think this is the most talented team that we have taken to the state tournament and I think all three of us coaches feel this way.”
