Confident is the best word to describe Claiborne Middle School football’s newest addition to the program. This player has played both little league softball and basketball since she was a youngster growing up. That’s right, “she.”
Mackenzie Brooke wanted to play last season but her mother had some concerns and didn’t actually know how serious her daughter was. Again, this year she approached both Coach Brody Wells and her mother asking to play. This time her mom said yes and she began showing up at practice. Although the team played Horace Maynard Aug. 18 and she knew she would not see playing time being a new player, Wells stated she would be eligible to play during the next game.
“We have only had her in full contact a couple of days and she understands that she won’t see playing time during tonight’s game. Overall, she’s an athlete and we are impressed with her,” said Wells when asked about her ability.
Her confidence was on display during an interview.
“I have played football, tackle and two-hand touch, with my friends and have always wanted to play the game,” she said.
When asked about what her mother thought about playing the game with a bunch of bigger and taller football players, she replied, “At first she was hesitant to let me play but I assured her I know what I’m going up against but it really doesn’t worry me. I realize that there is a chance of me getting hurt but I’m not worried about it. I guess I know that I likely will get hurt at some point but I have been preparing by paying attention in practice and watching videos so I’ll know what to do in certain situations.”
Brooke will be playing wide receiver for the Bulldogs and the team has accepted her as one of their own. Brooke added, “The guys have been so good to me and have accepted me as a player and treating me like one of their own.”
Her overwhelming confidence is evident and what someone takes in when talking to her. Many agree that her drive to be successful will take her far in softball, basketball or even football.
When asked what her favorite sport was she said, “I can’t pick a favorite sport between the three I play but I have to say I really love football.”
