HARROGATE—The Gap took on the Middlesboro Yellow Jackets, Tuesday, February 17,2009, for the second time this season. The Panthers took a role reversal and hosted the Yellow Jackets on their home court. The night began as the Junior Varsity took the floor. Earlier in the season, the JV Panthers were successful over the Yellow Jackets. They would try and succeed for a second win against them this season. First period the Panthers fell slightly behind the Jackets with a score of 12-14. However in the second period, it did not take long for the Panthers to acquire control of the ball game, ending the first half with a score of 36-22. The second half, the Panthers continued to score and took an easy win over the Jackets with a final score of 70-54. The leading scorer for the JV Panthers was Chase Adkins, with 24 points. Next and last up for the night, were the Varsity Panthers. Taking the floor on their home court gave the Panthers extra initiative for a win, not to mention the fact they had already been defeated by them back in early December. The Panthers were not going to take another loss. For Seniors, Cory Cheek and Ricky Earl, this would be their last home game of their high school career. Trying hard from the beginning, the Panthers kept a close trail to the Jackets. At the end of the first period, the Jackets lead by only 2 points; Gap 17- Boro 19. The Panthers continued to trail and even fell further behind in the second period going into half time with a score of 33-45. The third period consisted much of the same as did the first half: Panthers trying to gain the lead but struggling to even catch up. The Panthers still trailed going into the fourth with a score of 53-65. They knew the last period turnaround would be their only hope. And they got what they were hoping for. During the last period in the game, the Panthers displayed a major aggression change and were able to gain control, the lead, and the victory with a final score of 75-69. Scoring for the Panthers: Ricky Earl with 10 points, Mason Goad with 4 points, Ben Arnold with 2 points, Cory Cheek with 16 points, Trae Minton with 3 points, Timmy Ayers with 15 points, Jeffery Matlock with 11 points, and John Douglas with 8 points. Congratulations, boys, on two wins!
