The Powell Valley Indians loaded the buses and made the trip to Soldiers Memorial Middle School Nov. 13. In a very much anticipated meeting between the two schools it was the Blue Devils varsity teams that got the jobs done. All four teams met on the hardwood beginning with the junior varsity teams. The Lady Indians won the first of two JV games 6-5 but SMMS evened the score with a win on the boys side 19-9.
Next were the varsity games and they were interesting to say the least. The Lady Blue Devils got a big lead, lost it and still were able to handle the Lady Indians in the end. The Lady Blue Devils started fast leading 16-3 after one period of play and then led 18-3 at the half. The visiting team kept the pressure on the Lady Devils and made a game of it during the third period before SMMS made one last run that helped them secure the 28-13 victory.
Leading SMMS in scoring was Hailey Sexton with 10. Mckenzie Walker dropped in six. Bailey Poore and Jordan Fultz added four each and Caryle England along with Morgan Honeycutt each dropped in two points to complete the total. Haley Short led the Lady Indians with nine. Jennabeth Wilburn and Hayley Smallwood both scored two points.
The final game of the night featured two boys teams that at this point in the season are very close competitors. That goes for the entire county because Clairfield can mix it up with the other schools on a given night. With parity comes great games and that’s what the boys teams gave the audience. It took a while for the Blue Devils to get their offense going but at one point they looked to have the game in hand. A very good Indians team made a monumental comeback and gave the home team a scare.
At the final buzzer the Blue Devils had won by two points in a thriller, 38-36. Powell Valley opened up with a 11-1 run and made the SMMS fans very uncomfortable. The Blue Devils kept clawing away at the Indians and held the lead at the half 20-13. The Indians made their next run during the second half and ran out of time falling by only two points.
Seth Morelock quietly led the Blue Devils in scoring with 11 points while Logan Daniels and Tony Hicks both scored eight points. Landen Wilson finished with seven while Zack Bailey rounded out the total with four points. The Indians were led by Justin Moore with 15, Dylan Ellison with 10 and Lance Owens dropped in nine points. Riley Edwards completed the total with two points.
