The 2025 National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 1.

A special service will be held starting at 6 p.m. at the Tazewell Municipal Park (207 Richardson Road) with local government officials, ministers, business and community leaders leading prayers for our nation.

President Harry S. Truman proclaimed a National Day of Prayer to be observed on July 4, 1952, as a day set aside for Americans to give thanks, in accordance with their own faith, for our freedoms and blessings. President Ronald Reagan moved the observance to the first Thursday in May in 1988.

This year’s theme is “Pour out to the God of hope and be filled.” It’s based on the Bible verse Romans 15:13: “Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

The Tazewell event is being coordinated by Nick Pezzente.

“For one day out of the year, we can join with millions of other Americans in bringing light and hope to our country, through the power of prayer to Almighty God,” he said. “NDP will be observed at the state capital and on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Locally, I hope our entire community will realize the importance of God’s hand in America and will remember the great opportunity we still have in America to come before God publicly and corporately.”

Everyone is welcome to attend. The service is expected to last about an hour.
