Ask SIGCO is asking, “Do you know where your pill came from?” Unless you got it from a pharmacy or your doctor, it could contain a deadly dose of fentanyl.  Did you know that 80% of teen drug deaths involve fentanyl. Protect yourself and your friends by learning the facts at fentanylawarenessday.org.

National Fentanyl Awareness Day (NFAD) on April 29, 2025  is a day of action where hundreds of businesses, nonprofit organizations, schools, and government offices work together to educate and protect Americans from the deadly threat of Illicit Fentanyl and Counterfeit Prescription pills.  http://www.dea.gov/onepill

Nearly half of teens don’t know that deadly fentanyl is used to make fake pills sold on social media and in communities across the country. With young people increasingly seeking relief from stress through self-medication, this knowledge gap has devastating consequences. Through collaborative education and action, we can save lives.

This basic information could save lives in your community:

  • Fake prescription pills are perfect counterfeits of the real thing
  • Counterfeit Oxycodone, Percocet, Xanax and others are very accessible
  • Fake pills are sold online on campuses and on the streets
  • One fake pill can kill —j ust 2 milligrams of fentanyl (a few grains of sand) can be lethal
  • Over 4,000 young Americans under age 25 die each year from Fentanyl
  • Nearly half of teens still don’t understand that pills bought online or on the street are often laced with Fentanyl

Some States are passing laws to combat the fentanyl epidemic. One recent legislation update for Tennessee is SB 1415 & HB 0751 that passed unanimously making fentanyl & analogues (similar in nature) in the presence of a child a felony offence.

To learn about this and more, please join us for the SIGCO monthly Coalition luncheon. There will be a Naloxone Free training provided at the next meeting on May 12th at the SIGCO office located at 325 Straight Creek Rd., New Tazewell, Tn. 37825. Our Regional Overdose Prevention Specialist Kristi McCaleb will be presenting this training and will provide attendees with a certificate of training.

Naloxone is a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. It is an antagonist. This means that it attaches to opioid receptors and reverses and blocks the effects of other opioids. Naloxone can quickly restore normal breathing to a person if their breathing has slowed or stopped because of an opioid overdose. However, with a Poly Drug combination Naloxone may not be effective.
