The J. Frank White Academy boys and girls high school basketball teams traveled to Heritage Christian Academy in New Tazewell on Sept. 22 to carry out the first of several planned reading events as a part of a service project designed by the school’s athletics director, Cory Cheek.

J. Frank White Academy student-athletes were paired with pre-K through fourth grade Heritage students to read in small groups and pairs. This opportunity allowed JFWA Knights athletes to engage younger Heritage students by providing positive role models while reinforcing the importance of literacy.

When discussing the reasoning for designing this opportunity Cheek stated, “This event gave our student-athletes an opportunity to be servant leaders in the community. We strive to motivate and provide opportunities for our athletes to reach their full potential in all areas of life, not just on the court.”

Heritage has invited the JFWA students back to participate in more reading events in the near future.

When asked about the impact of the program, J. Frank White Academy principal Jarryd Boster stated, “I am very proud of our students and their values. Our students are learning to lead our community through serving others. This type of opportunity makes a real difference in the lives of young people and can shape our community for years to come.”

J. Frank White Academy is located on the campus of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate.
